I Was Here:
This young adult realistic fiction is written by Gayle Forman, author of If I Stay and Where She Went. I read If I Stay and can honestly admit that I was not a huge fan of it--I thought she could have done a lot more with the unique story line. However, I Was Here is a powerful, gripping, and heartbreaking look into the lives of several young people trying to come to grips when a close friend commits suicide without any warning signs. A real fear that many of us have is losing someone we love, and to lose them by suicide is a burden that many have to face. I think this story is important for young people and adults alike, and is an emotional rollercoaster filled with love, grief, and acceptance.
This young adult novel by Lauren Oliver definitely surprised me, in a good way. I was weary about it simply because it is about love and I am skeptical when it comes to love stories. However, I was pleasantly surprised. The world Lauren created is not too out of the realm of possibilities for our future. It isn't completely unrealistic. The young protagonist isn't crazy about love. When being matched with a suitor she isn't thrilled about it at all. So, when she falls for a rebel, it isn't exactly surprising but it definitely yields to great character development. She becomes less robotic and more realistic--she understands what love actually feels like and she is willing to risk anything to pursue it. The ending is spectacular and leaves you wanting more. For a dystopian world, it has just the right amount of suspense and romance to keep the reader on edge!
This young adult novel by Kiera Cass had me weary to purchase it, but I love dystopians so I gave it a shot. I am not a romance fan whatsoever, but the way this "love" story is set up keeps it interesting the entire time. The main character does not yearn for love, she only agrees to the Selection to help her family financially. When she arrives at the Selection she immediately reveal to her potential lover that she is not interested in being his wife, and yet se an this by form an unlikely relationship. I have not read the next two books in the trilogy, but I am definitely interested in what how this story is going to play out.
